Solar Training

ONTILITY provides more solar training classes and solar training courses than anyone in North America. ONTILITY provides a full array of solar PV training and solar thermal training courses taught by our industry-leading, certified instructors. All of our solar training courses follow the Institute for Sustainable Power Quality (ISPQ) standards and the NABCEP photovoltaic learning objectives and task analysis. We are proud to offer these solar training courses on a weekly basis as well as online to meet the needs of the growing green and renewable workforce.

  • Solar Fundamentals Training

    This workshop provides an introduction to electricity and hot water production using solar technologies. The workshop begins with an overview of solar energy - how sunlight is converted to electricity and heat. Topics also include basic residential and commercial solar electric and thermal system design and installation, markets and applications, and emerging technologies.


  • (One Day Contractor-Specific Workshop) (S100)*


  • Solar PV Technician Training

    This course is designed for those who are directly responsible for hands-on installation, troubleshooting, maintenance and operation of solar electric systems. Topics include solar energy fundamentals, measurement and calculation for system layout and placement, system installation techniques (mechanical and electrical), troubleshooting and maintenance.


    This course considers a variety of solar energy systems for residential and commercial applications including grid-interactive, stand-alone and those with battery backup.

  • Solar Thermal Technician

    The three-day Solar Thermal Technician training is designed for those who are directly responsible for hands-on installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of solar hot water systems.


  • (Three Day Contractor-Specific Workshop) (S102)*


  • Solar Success: Entry Level Solar Electric Training (ISPQ)

    This course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of solar technologies and a study of the history and current state of the solar photovoltaic industry. Course content includes an introduction to solar radiation, photovoltaic technologies and systems, characteristics and considerations of various system types, site selection and overview of various systems and system components.


    This course provides an orientation and analysis of solar energy systems for residential and commercial applications. The course includes electricity basics and code, design and use of grid-tie and grid-tie with battery back-up, inverters and charge controllers, overview of electrical utility systems, and requirements to work with electrical utilities, instruction regarding permitting, inspection, commissioning, documentation and labeling requirements, point-of-utility connection, and system maintenance practices and procedures. Upon completion of this class, students are eligible to take the NABCEP Entry Level PV Exam. The exam is administered after the conclusion of (S103) and (S106) classes.


  • (Five Day Workshop) (S103)*


  • Solar Success: Thermal Design and Installation (ISPQ)

    This course provides students with basic knowledge of solar thermal system design, installation, troubleshooting and operation procedures for residential and commercial water and pool heating. The course is designed for all students and includes classroom instruction, component demonstration, and a hands-on installations lab. The course is designed for all individuals that want to seek entry level solar training and or NABCEP certification.


  • (Three Day Workshop) (S104)*


  • Solar Success: PV Design and Installation - Online

    This course is the classroom portion of Ontility’s Entry Level Solar Electric Training (S103) and provides an introduction to the fundamentals of solar technologies and a study of the history and current state of the solar photovoltaic industry. Course content includes an introduction to solar radiation, photovoltaic technologies and systems, characteristics and considerations of various system types, site selection and overview of various systems and system components.


    This course provides an orientation and analysis of solar energy systems for residential and commercial applications. The course includes electricity basics and code, design and use of grid-tie and grid-tie with battery back-up, inverters and charge controllers, overview of electrical utility systems, and requirements to work with electrical utilities, instruction regarding permitting, inspection, commissioning, documentation and labeling requirements, point-of-utility connection, and system maintenance practices and procedures.


  • (24 hour - Online Program) (S105)*


  • Solar Installation Lab

    This course is the lab portion of Ontility’s Entry Level Solar Electric Training (S103) and provides hands-on experience with solar PV equipment, materials and tools. Topics include site survey and shading analysis, PV module wiring, system mechanical layout and installation, mounting techniques and equipment, and balance of system installation.


    Upon completion of this class and its companion lab, (S105), students are eligible to take the NABCEP Entry Level PV Exam. The exam is administered after the conclusion of S106 and (S103) classes.


  • (Two Day Hands-on Lab) (S106)*


  • Electrician Solar Electric Training

    The class, while geared toward professional electricians, is open to anyone with an interest in installing solar PV systems and who has some experience in the electrical trades. It is highly recommended that students have a sound understanding of solar energy fundamentals before coming to class


  • (Two Day Workshop) (S108)*


  • PV Technical Sales Training

    This workshop is designed for solar contractors and installers, electrical contractors, home builders, general contractors and others who sell solar PV systems. This class will cover solar fundamentals, customer and site qualification processes, site analysis, system design, system components and estimation.


  • (Two Day Workshop) (S109)*


  • Advanced Solar Design

    This workshop is designed for advanced solar energy experts who need to produce high quality specifications and documentation required by architectural design teams, engineering firms, developers and discerning property owners. This class will cover design drawings, feasibility reports, stringent building department reviews, the bid process, and construction administration for small to large scale, grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) systems.


  • (Three Day Workshop) (AS110)


  • Advanced Solar Design and Installation

    This course is designed for experienced dealers, installers, electricians and others who have a solid understanding of solar fundamentals, basic electrical and mechanical concepts and a familiarity with the National Electric Code. Topics include system design and component specification, in-depth electrical and mechanical calculations, diagnostic testing and troubleshooting, project document preparation. Diagnostic testing and system performance analysis training will be provided by technical representatives form major component manufacturers. This course is a combination of in-class and hands-on lab activities.


  • (Five Day Workshop) (AS111)


  • NABCEP® Certified PV Installer Exam Prep

    This intensive two-day solar training workshop is the PV industry's most thorough preparatory class for the NABCEP® photovoltaic (PV) Installer Certification exam. Students review advanced Solar PV, electrical and safety topics, and discuss test-taking strategy. Individual assessment of strengths and weaknesses and a study plan is provided.


  • (Two Day Workshop) (AS210)


  • Lead Renovator Course

    This course is presented by experienced building industry professionals from a practical “real world” jobsite perspective with an emphasis on “best practices” and what you can do to minimize risks and liabilities as it pertains to working with lead. It qualifies as both an energy efficiency and solar related course.
